About The LRTA

The Lahave River Trail Association is a non-profit organization whose goal is to develop and maintain shared-use trail between Bridgewater and New Germany in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, Canada which will provide links to other trails being developed in the area and beyond.

Our vision is also to see some interpretive information to highlight natural and cultural activities/history as well as rest points added as we are able.

Our Association has been networking with a number of other Trails in Lunenburg County.   We have also been working with The Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Transportation who are owners of proposed trail route.

There are a number of challenges associated with the trail development in this area that other groups do not have such as the disappearance of some of the rail bed due to highway construction in the past, as well as the fact that some of the rail bed has been sold to abutting land owners by the Province, and the discovery on two sections of our trail of species of endangered plants which must be protected.

In spite of these obstacles, we have before us a very interesting, challenging and achievable future, and we are exploring that journey vigorously:

  • We are very pleased that significant upgrading has been completed on the section from the Lunenburg Rod and Gun Club to the Wentzell Road including parking and on to Salmon Run Road
  • Construction forged new Trail from Cookville Bridge to the Cookville Provincial Park and also included upgrading from the Cookville Falls to the Cookville Bridge
  • A Connector trail from the Falls rises to the Best Western Plus Hotel
  • We have also experimented with winter grooming the Cookville section as far as Bridgewater as well as the Wentzell's Lake section
  • We completed the section from the Veinot Road on the northern edge of Pinehurst to connect with the Valley Trail in New Germany
  • The Trail was expanded northward from the Cookville Provincial Park first to the Rhodenizer Road
  • A professional plan is in place to help guide our Trail development
